Detour to Destiny

Someone asked me, “When you came to God, did it feel like you had to get to know yourself all over again?” That question has been on my mind all week because the answer is a resounding yes!

I don’t think we truly realize how much trauma we’ve carried until we come to God. So many things happen in life that shape our identity—how we see ourselves, how we show up in the world, and how we view life and others.

When you ask someone, “Tell me about yourself,” most people respond with their job, zodiac sign, age, or hobbies—never realizing they are so much more than what the world defines them to be.

But we were created by God, placed in this moment in history on purpose because there is something the world needs from us. We tend to focus on ourselves and those closest to us, but our assignment is so much bigger than that. God calls us to leave an impact that remains even after this world is gone. So yes, I do have to relearn myself—because the real question was: Who is the woman You created me to be, Lord?

In Christ, we are a new creation. I’ve been a stripper before. I’ve been a nurse before. But a woman of God? This is new. I once lived life thinking only about myself and those around me, but now, this new woman—she is called to impact the world. So who is she? What does she look like? How does she speak? How does she carry herself? What does she consume—physically, mentally, and spiritually? What kinds of people does she surround herself with? These things matter because if you want to see different, you have to be different. Transformation starts in the mind—because everything begins with a thought. The place you are in life right now is a direct result of your thoughts and choices. That’s why the Bible speaks so much about renewing the mind—change happens from the inside out.

We have to be willing to unlearn everything we thought we knew—about the world and about ourselves. This world is in the middle of an identity crisis. People chase after one another because no one has a true sense of direction. They look to celebrities and influencers, thinking they have the answers just because they have money and status. But what they don’t realize is that money is one of the easiest things to get—people sacrifice their integrity for it every day. And God? He doesn’t need you to compromise your character to bless you.

Being blessed is a mindset, not a bank account.

We are not who the world says we are. We are who God says we are. Our true identity is found in Him—because only the Creator of a thing can define its purpose. Just because someone only uses their phone to text doesn’t mean that’s all it was designed to do.

It is only when we seek Jesus that we find truth—because He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Any path we walk that He has not led us on is false.

I’ve explored many paths before I found this one. And in each place, I conformed to that environment. When I was a dancer, people didn’t call me by my real name—they called me by my stripper name. I didn’t check vitals at the club, and I didn’t show up at the nursing home drunk, high, and dancing on a pole while men threw money at me. In every space, I became the identity of that environment.

So why would it be any different now? Now, I am conforming to Minister Marchetta Imon. Just like I had to learn those false identities, I now have to learn this one. Some days are easier than others, but knowing that this is my truth is what keeps me going.
